This image features actress Ruth Madeley, with the ozone hole artfully painted across her body. This planetary boundary stands as a symbol of both hope and caution. Unlike many environmental issues, the ozone layer is a success story in terms of coordinated global action, particularly through initiatives like the Montreal Protocol, which have largely halted its depletion.
The ozone layer serves as Earth’s natural sunscreen, shielding life from harmful ultraviolet rays. Its preservation is crucial for the wellbeing of ecosystems and human health, reducing risks such as skin cancer and cataracts, as well as protecting marine life.
While stratospheric ozone depletion is currently within a ‘safe zone’, the image serves as a poignant reminder that this success is fragile. “Fragile Veil” prompts important conversations about the continued need for vigilance and collective action to safeguard this crucial planetary boundary, illustrating that resting on our laurels is not an option.

Description
The image is printed on Hahnemühle Hemp Eco Fine Art paper, made with 60% hemp fibres and 40% cotton linters – a leftover from the oil and textile industry, which gives it a natural look and feel, and reduces the environmental impact of the paper. The paper is also acid-free, ligning-free and OBA-free, making it perfect for long-term display. The print studio we use is carbon-neutral. Prints are produced on demand to reduce waste, and we use drop shipping to reduce the distance the print travels to reach you.
The shoot itself was done using only daylight, and all participants travelled to the studio using public transport. This ‘painting’ was one of three done on the same day.
